Tenure-Track Professorship for Transatlantic and North-American History
at the Faculty of Humanities in the Department of History.
Fulltime position, Start-date: At the earliest possible date.

This is a grade W1-professorship to which performance payments can be offered.


This professorship is suitable for highly qualified early career researchers.


The successful candidate should cover Transatlantic and North-American history in research and teaching (18th to 21st centuries), thereby contributing to the Faculty’s profile in global history and further developing the field of „area studies“. The Faculty expects a corresponding research focus. The successful candidate will cooperate closely with the other chairs in Modern History at the Department of History and with other disciplines and institutions in and beyond the Faculty of Philosophy (in particular Political Science, Sociology, Ethnology, Islamic Studies, Sinology, American Literature, Arnold-Bergsträsser Institute), An active participation in establishing new collaborative research projects (SFB/collaborative research centers and GK/graduate centers) as well as the further development of existing comparative teaching courses (Master-Programs “History” and „Comparative Modern History“) and new programmes (Master-Program „International History and Politics“ is expected.


Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record.


This position is a fixed term of four years. After a successful interim evaluation, it can be extended by two years. Furthermore, the tenure procedure towards Full Professorship W3 will be initiated after successful interim evaluation.


The tenure procedures are regulated in the Statutes and Quality Assurance Concept for Junior Professorships and Tenure-Track Professorships and agreed upon with the Ministry of Science (https://www.zuv.uni-freiburg.de/service/tenure). As a prerequisite for granting tenure and the subsequent conversion into a full professorship (W3) (1) the requirements defined in the Statutes and Quality Assurance Concept have to be met and (2) the subject specific criteria determined by the Faculty have to be met.
